  • History

  • The Bonsai Society of Sydney was formed in 1999 by a group of Megumi Bennett’s bonsai students and was known Megumi’s Bonsai Kai. In 2001, the group held its first public exhibition and in 2002 became a Member of the Australian Associated Bonsai Clubs (AABC) and the Bonsai Federation of Australia (BFA). Membership continued to grow and the name no longer seemed appropriate so after much thought and discussion, the group become the Bonsai Society of Sydney Inc in 2004. The group made a significant contribution to Bonsai in Australia by hosting the 18th AABC National Bonsai Convention held at Sydney Olympic Park in 2005. From a small group of Megumi’s students the Society has grown to boast some 130 members in 2007 and has elected representatives on both the AABC and BFA.

Senior citizens enjoy an afternoon of Bonsai

On Friday 22nd May, Dennis Lavell presented, on behalf of the BSS, an 'Introduction To Bonsai' at the Dougherty Centre, Chatswood, to a group of senior citizens. They all thoroughly enjoyed Dennis's presentation that he supported with a power point of pictures and number of fine examples of bonsai from his own collection.

Megumi demonstrates her skills at Mount Gambier

Mount Gambier Bonsai Society invites Megumi Bennett, through the AABC tutor program, for a 3 days program of five demonstrations and a number of workshops at the end of last March. The Society's intention was to let bonsai enthusiasts know about the demonstrations and to encourage interested people to become members of the Society. As a consequence, the demonstrations and workshops were all well attended for the 3 days. At the end of the program the Treasurer was pleased to report 13 new members for the Society and that at the April and May meetings there were many new faces finding out whether bonsai was for them. For Megumi personally she was happy to help the Society and to make many new friends.
