  • History

  • The Bonsai Society of Sydney was formed in 1999 by a group of Megumi Bennett’s bonsai students and was known Megumi’s Bonsai Kai. In 2001, the group held its first public exhibition and in 2002 became a Member of the Australian Associated Bonsai Clubs (AABC) and the Bonsai Federation of Australia (BFA). Membership continued to grow and the name no longer seemed appropriate so after much thought and discussion, the group become the Bonsai Society of Sydney Inc in 2004. The group made a significant contribution to Bonsai in Australia by hosting the 18th AABC National Bonsai Convention held at Sydney Olympic Park in 2005. From a small group of Megumi’s students the Society has grown to boast some 130 members in 2007 and has elected representatives on both the AABC and BFA.

2008 Annual Exhibition Highlights - August 16-17

Visitors came early & stayed late

Saturday dawned bright and sunny; visitors started arriving early and the stream continued for the two days we were open. Congratulations to everyone, with approximately 620 visitors, it was probably the best-supported exhibition we have had. Our visitors enjoyed not only the exhibition, but the bonsai and ikebana demonstrations as well. All of these were well supported, so a big thank you to the members of the Koryu Shoyo-kai School of Ikebana, Sydney Chapter and to our BSS members who prepared and presented the demonstrations. Our thanks go to those who donated the raffle prizes: Barbara Sebbens for the beautiful juniper bonsai; Valerie Bray for the wonderful hand made Japanese style cushion; and Bonsai Art for a part share in the $50 Gift Voucher.

And the awards went too!

Ric Roberts was delighted to see such a high standard of exhibition trees. He was very reluctant to award prizes as he felt that many of the exhibition trees were worthy of an award. So once again congratulations to everyone for the high standard of all the trees that were so well prepared and presented. This year saw a change from previous years, in that there was no categories as such and Ric was asked to select the best five tress in an open section and the best tree in the novice section. This year for the first time we asked our visitors to vote on their favourite tree in the exhibition. This created a lot of interest and a lot of discussion was heard as you walked around the exhibition hall. Many trees received a good many votes and in fact there was not one clear winner, but two. So this year we will present two Ron Sebbens Awards for the people's choice.

Congratulations to winners who are as follows:

Open section

Barbara Sebbens for her Premna japonica in the informal upright style.

Glenda Wong for her Juniperus squamata in a waterfall cascade style.

Brent Sands for his Pinus densiflora (red pine) in the literate style.

Ron Lovatt for his Ficus rubiginosa (Port Jackson fig) in the informal upright style.

Lorraine Knight for her Banksia serrata in an informal upright style.

Novice section

Lorraine Munsie for the Acer buergerianum (trident maple) saikei setting.

The Ron Sebbens Award

Ron Lovatt for his Juniperus squamata in a waterfall cascade style.

Brent Gerstle for his Lagerstroemia indica (crepe murtle) in the informal upright style.
